Runners Hit by Truck Tire, Suffering Serious Injuries

A woman and her fiance suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in Miami FL Monday morning when they were both struck by a tractor trailer tire that apparently flew off a tractor trailer on Rickenbacker Causeway.

The Miami fire department responded to the 911 call and stated that the truck was going west on the causeway when it lost two tires. One tire bounced into a parking lot and the other flew into the eastbound lane, hitting both runners.

The male runner, who is the boyfriend of the female runner, stayed with her and performed CPR. The woman was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries but was not in mortal danger. The other runner also was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

The truck driver stated that he did not know what caused the tires to fall off, which way 200 pounds each.

As truck accident attorneys handling cases in Virginia and West Virginia most of the time, we hope that both runners recover soon from their injuries. One of the things that we often see in our truck accident injury cases is trucking companies who do not properly maintain their rigs. According to the Virginia Commercial Driver’s Manual, truck drivers should conduct daily pre-trip safety inspections.

One of the things that truck drivers should do is to carefully inspect the tires. They should look closely at the treads to ensure that they have enough tread to be driven safely. Also, truck drivers should inspect the wheels and rims of their truck. They should lock for rust around wheel nuts, loose lug nuts, missing clamps, mismatched, cracked or bent lock rings, and rims that have been welded.

Our truck accident lawyers often represent people who have been seriously injured in truck accidents by reckless truckers. We once represented a family whose car was essentially run over and flattened by the rig. That case was settled for $5.5 million, and we were able to show in court that one of the children injured had developed encephalomalacia, which is cell death in the brain.

We hope that the runners in the above case are able to present their case to a solid truck crash attorney and get the compensation they deserve for their injuries.
