Our View
Our Virginia and North Carolina personal injury attorneys know that no amount of money can ever bring back a loved one after a preventable accident. But in a preventable car and truck accident such as the one above, it is important to make sure that the person or company who caused the crash pays for the untimely death of an innocent person.
If we cannot put a price on a human life, how do wrongful death attorneys determine damages in these cases? An experienced attorney can help a grieving family to determine what amount is appropriate by totaling compensatory and punitive damages. Typical damages that a family can recover in a wrongful death settlement are:
- Funeral expenses and burial costs
- Medical expenses and hospital bills
- Loss of companionship and loss of care
- Pain and suffering and mental anguish
- Loss of future wages
- Loss of pension plans and loss of inheritance
- Loss of childcare and housekeeping
- Loss of medical coverage
- Punitive damages
Wrongful death settlements can be large, and often, the deceased was the bread winner for a family. So it is important to make certain that as much compensation as possible is received in a wrongful death lawsuit.
